BwCCS Sixth Graders Become Egyptologists PDF Print E-mail
BwCCS sixth graders kicked off to their two-month-long study of Ancient Egypt at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Wednesday, January 20th.  The 50 students became well versed in Ancient Egyptian archaeology as they examined artifacts including statues, pottery, carvings, temples, hieroglyphics and, of course, mummies dating back more than 6,000 years. The students were asked to determine whether Ancient Egypt was a civilized society and collect evidence to support their conclusions. Working in small groups, they sketched artifacts that evidenced Egyptian sophistication in religion, government and technology.

When asked what he liked most about the trip, sixth grader Anthony Nieves replied, "I enjoyed learning about Egyptian writing at the museum and translating it." Sixth grader Maya Matunis enjoyed the jewelry. She noted, "[I]t was very modern and looked like what we would wear today."
